America’s Got Talent Season 14 Returns with a Bang This May, Boasts New Host and Judges

America’s top variety competition series, America’s Got Talent, is set to hit the screens with its 14th Season at the end of this month.

A stark departure from its previous seasons, fans of the global ratings juggernaut are in for a big surprise as the upcoming season will bring with it a few changes including a fresh host and two new judges.

“Brooklyn Nine-Nine” star Terry Crews will take over Tyra Banks as host of the hit series, a role he is familiar with, having emceed the highly rated spinoff “America’s Got Talent: The Champions”. Meanwhile, award-winning actress, author and producer Gabrielle Union as well as actress, dancer, singer and Emmy Award-winning choreographer Julianne Hough will debut as the series’ new judges, alongside executive producer Simon Cowell and fan favourite Howie Mandel, to shake up the judges’ table.

Union and Hough will replace singer Mel B and model Heidi Klum who had both been sitting on the judges’ panel since Season 8. Together, the refreshed panel of judges will sift through hundreds of auditions nationwide in search of the most unique, jaw-dropping and show-stopping performers worthy of the chance to be crowned as the ultimate winner of America’s Got Talent.

Eric Chien, who was crowned the winner of Asia’s Got Talent last month, had auditioned for A(US)GT. His colour-changing sleight-of-hand performance blew the audience and judges away, including seasoned judge Simon Cowell who had asked Eric point-blank prior to his audition if he was better than America’s Got Talent: The Champion winner and fellow magician Shin Lim. Eric’s performance also earned him a standing ovation and four yes-es to advance to the next round.

There was also another inspiring audition, which went viral over social media. Kodi Lee, 22, lives with his parents and two other siblings in Southern Carolina. Despite being blind and autistic, Kodi is a musical prodigious savant. His piano and singing performance moved new judge and L.A.’s Finest female lead Gabrielle Union to use her first golden buzzer to create one of the most emotional moments in A(US)GT history.

This year’s series promises to be a season of spectacular talents and extraordinary participants. Fans can catch the brand-new season of America’s Got Talent from Thursday, 30 May 2019 at 6pm (5pm JKT/BKK) on AXN, within 48 hours of the U.S. telecast. Same-day encore telecast is available at 8pm (7pm JKT/BKK).

Because of You, I Can - P&G and NTUC FairPrice presents Mother's Day Celebration with Special Olympics Athletes

Last weekend, I had the opportunity to spend time commemorating Mother's Day with Special Olympics athletes and their moms brought by Procter & Gamble (P&G) and NTUC FairPrice.

The 6th iteration of P&G's global campaign Thank You, Mom in partnership with NTUC FairPrice was filled with fun and laughter with its carnival at Rainbow Centre, and was graced by distinguished guests and special kids.

This year's theme, Because of You, I Can celebrates a mother's role as her child's first and greatest enabler - the ones who sees her child's true potential and helps them become who they are. This event puts the spotlight on mothers of Special Olypics athletes, who give their all in overcoming challenges and struggles to enable their children to excel in their chosen sport and, in the process, become a true inspiration for others.

Truly, it was inspiring as it evokes introspection. Should we give up our let downs while they hurdled their challenges everyday?

To showcase P&G's strong commitment to the Special Olympics community and lead the way in being a force for good, P&G and NTUC FairPrice also presented a SGD$20,000 check to Special Olympics Singapore.

During this fun-filled afternoon, Special Olympic athletes, their mothers and distinguished guests including Singapore Member of Parliament and Mayor of Central Disctrict, Ms Denise Phua, mingled with each other and snacked on fun-fair goodies, including candy floss and ice cream, as we indulge in nostalgic carnival games such as toss the ring and basketball arade.

Adding on to the event were mascots of superheroes as a symbolic gestures as these moms are indeed superheroes.

The carnival clearly recognizes the essential contribution that mothers make in the community to bringing up their children to achieve their full potential. It is wondrous that mothers of special needs children here overcome challenges to enable their young Special Olympics athletes to excel in their chosen sport.

After all, as Ms Denice Phua said, mothers are one of the key building blocks of society and the pillar of strength in many families. Just as children with special needs face greater life challenges compared to their peers, mothers of special needs children often show exceptional grit in overcoming untold struggles to support their children in accessing equal opportunities and maximizing their potential.

They are indeed, our unsung heroes. Speaking of which, Mr Tng Ah Yiam, Deputy CEO and Head of Products also added that mothers are the unsung heroes in our families who inspires us to be the best of ourselves. This campaign is an opportune time to show our appreciation to all mothers in our community.

During this carnival, an exclusive and touching short film produced with Special Olympics athletes was also screened to pay tribute to their mothers who have defied the odds to enable them to excel in their sports. Watch it here.

Till then!

Change The Cycle by Carousell

In line with Earth Day next week, Carousell did some research about the fashion industry and they found some really interesting facts about the waste that is being generated from a single piece of clothing. They have created a #ChangeTheCycle movement on Carousell to encourage people like you to sell your preloved clothes to save the environment and also earn some extra cash!

I believe everyone should dress well, have a proper carrier when they shop and have proper straws to suck on when they drink carbonated drinks. Technology for green products are actually readily available too. Moderate consumption is key and sometimes, our lifestyle changes and we may not need the things we used to have anymore. Others might need it more now and they probably would not use it for too long. This is especially prevalent in luxury styles that we no longer adhere to but others might.

So, if it is still in pristine condition, why not pass it down and cash in for yourself? That is like paying yourself for taking care of your preloved items!

On a very personal note, just don't be a bitch when someone has given you an extremely positive review and you give a subpar one without reasons.

Sensational Magician Eric Chien’s Winning Trick Makes Him the First Taiwanese to be Crowned Winner of Asia’s Got Talent

After an intensive 10-week search in Asia which saw hundreds of hopeful acts from across 17 countries auditioning for that one big break, the viewers have voted, and their votes have crowned nimble-fingered magician from Taiwan, Eric Chien, as the winner of Asia’s Got Talent Season 3.

His poetic slight-of-hand tricks has set him apart from other Asia’s Got Talent performers, dazzling millions across Asia, and eventually clinching him the win this evening. It is the first time a Taiwanese has landed on this accolade since Asia’s Got Talent started its Season 1 in 2015.

It was a tough competition in last week’s Grand Final show with eight other talented Grand Finalists – hip hop and street dance 16-member crew JUNIOR GOOD VIBES from the Philippines, Taiwanese dance crew MANIAC Family, the feminine yet strong hijab-clad girl group NAMA from Malaysia, contemporary acrobatic dance duo Power Duo from the Philippines, nimble-fingered shadow play master Shadow Ace from the Philippines, powerful and groovy singer Siti Saniyah from Indonesia, human calculator YAASHWIN SARAWANAN from Malaysia and gravity-defying Cyr Wheel performer YANG SHIH HAO from Taiwan. Eric Chien had ultimately proven to be the crowd’s favourite, rallying the most votes to walk away with the grand prize of US$100,000.

Asia’s Got Talent Season 3 culminated tonight at Marina Bay Sands Singapore, with a star-studded performance by powerhouse judges David Foster, Anggun and Jay Park. The thunderous applause from the floor when David opened the judges’ performance proved the legendary status of the 16-times Grammy Award winner. He elevated the show with the addition of American Idol sensation Pia Toscano and classical crossover vocalist Fernando Varela who stunned the audiences with their powerful vocal prowess singing “You Raise Me Up” and “All By Myself”; Anggun breathed new life into Italian singer-songwriter Lucio Dalla’s famous classic “Caruso”, delivering an impossible operatic duet with the late Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti. Finally, Jay Park brought the house down with the premiere performance of his long-awaited new single “K-Town”, which was produced in collaboration with famed American Record Producer Hit Boy, first on Asia’s Got Talent.

“Asia’s Got Talent has really been an important platform that allowed me to showcase my magic to the world. Given the stiff competition, I didn’t see this win coming. It’s a humbling experience. I would like to thank all acts of Season 3 that have come together to show the world the talents we have in Asia,” said Eric Chien, winner of Asia’s Got Talent Season 3. “As the first Taiwanese act to come out top, I really hope I've made everyone back at home proud and inspired more magicians to come forward.”

“Asia’s Got Talent Season 3 has seen a diversified display of talents; exceeding expectations of talent shows as well as geographical representation. We have also seen a new phenomenon where fans have risen above nationalistic feelings, and casted their votes for acts based on merits and appeal. All these have anchored Asia’s Got Talent as a valued platform for talented Asian acts. I am grateful that these world-class performances have given AXN great content to deliver a high-quality production to delight and thrill our global audiences and this has made AXN the #1 International channel during Asia’s Got Talent Season 3’s premiere timeslot collectively in Malaysia, Philippines and Singapore*! Finally, I would like to congratulate Eric Chien on the well-deserved win, and a big thank you to the remaining eight finalists and judges David Foster, Anggun and Jay Park, for another amazing season of Asia’s Got Talent,” said Virginia Lim, Senior Vice President & General Manager, Networks and Distribution, Sony Pictures Television.

Malaysia 2019 - Retreat at DoubleTree Hilton, Johor

You only worked for four days and you said you are tired? Have you tried working for eighteen years? 😂

Celebrities young or old when they are on tour, they have at least a day break in between to reassess themselves, have time for a proper meal and probably a power nap. Whereas for me, I worked more than six hours entertaining more than one person that week, how could I not be spent? I am not saying I hate what I do but it does take a lot of mental, physical and spiritual energy. There are days where I would just actually sit and they are lucky enough if I could roll out my tongue and speak.

It was indeed a fruitful and enjoyable week and because of that, I deserve a retreat! No?

A few weeks ago, after four days of being back at my beloved hometown - yes, what is there not to love about my hometown? Everything runs pretty much smoothly I daresay. I am not discounting other countries that I have travelled to but it is always good to be back even though times may be hard.

Walau hujan emas di negeri orang, lebih baik hujan batu di negeri sendiri. Classic idiom equivalent to the grass always seems greener on the other side - but that's probably because you forgot to water your own lawn.

Back to the grind now.

Malaysia 2019 - Dato' Sri Siti Nurhaliza On Tour Concert, Kuala Lumpur

It was like I was on tour!

Recently, my longtime idol Siti Nurhaliza had a concert tour in three major Southeast Asian cities, Jakarta, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur after being on hiatus for about a year due to pregnancy. It has been a while since I went for a concert and this time, no expenses spared in grabbing the best seat for her concert. At first, I was in a dilemma if I should go for the one in Jakarta, Singapore or Kuala Lumpur. It would have been so convenient to go for the one in Singapore but I thought I needed a break from daunting door knocking. As such, I decided to go for the one across the border, away from everything else. What's more, I had visitors from Jakarta to entertain which makes it an opportune time to show them around Kuala Lumpur.

Held at Axiata Arena, the concert was no other than spectacular! I felt very blessed to be a part of the sold-out show, what's more, to be amongst the many VIPs, royalties and many other celebrities who were there. I was ecstatic to see the tens of thousands of spectators who were so energetic when the opening performance started. Even more so, to be able to say hello to Siti Nurhaliza's husband, popularly known as Dato' K! She had performed many concerts singing her popular singles time and again but each time, she never fails to impress us with new renditions to her songs. For the first time, her concert started with traditional 'wayang kulit' which featured a short story of how she grew up selling curry puffs in her kampung days to becoming a successful entertainer she is today. Different from other shows, her traditional segment kickstarted the mesmerizing show. I for one, was grateful as the first number performed is my favourite and was recomposed into a more epical tune.

I told myself not to record but it was hard not to do it knowing that I would miss the concert when I am back. Thankfully, I broke my promise because there are days when I was bored I would replay some of the recorded segments. Now, I am just hoping it would be out on Netflix some time soon so that I could watch the ultra-HD version at home with 'all-around-you' sound system. (whispers 'all around you' a la cinema introduction)

This was a fantabulous birthday gift and I could not be any more grateful.

I could only sense someone will getting a promotion soon for bringing in so many tourists. It was well deserved given the hard work put in. Most celebrities with that portfolio and profile would probably retire from the entertainment world - especially at that age. It is a no wonder to date, she is still looked up upon by many. Even teenagers know her at least by name. Siti Nurhaliza is probably an epitome of grit, passion and dedication for most Malay girls out there.

Then again, some others would be saying I said all those because I am a fan. Perhaps?

Malacca was my pit stop before heading back home. The weather was atrocious. Even by the sea, it was only hot wind blowing on my face. As I was there for only a night, I explored Jonker Street. If you are attentive enough, amongst the bustling night market, you could spot the mausoleum of Hang Kasturi, one of the famous five warriors during the reign of Malacca Sultanate.

That is all for an update! Although I enjoyed myself, I was exhausted due to the weather. A few days later, I was back in Malaysia. Why? Stay tuned for the next post!

Pole Dancing With Asia's Got Talent Semi-Finalist Louis Sue

Who knew pole dancing could be so tough?

Recently, I had the honour to try out pole dancing with Asia's Got Talent semi-finalist Louis Sue and it was a bizzare experience! Pole dancing surely puts workout in a more glamorous and sexier light than it seems because of the acrobatic movements invovled. However, for me, I would rather leave that pole to the professionals. It was not as easy as it seems for one to twist and turn around the pole like there was no friction!

Then, there I was, frantically trying to cling on to the pole like a monkey in hoping I would stay in position. Unfortunately, I tend slid down, just like my hope!

Pole dancing harnesses a lot on your body weight and if you are in it for a long time, it develops strength and agility for your entire body. It could also be a good cardio depending on the music you are pole dancing to.

We now know why Louis Sue's performance was the highlight at Asia's Got Talent and received three yesses from judges David Foster, Anggun and Jay Park. We wish Louis Sue all the best for his performance in the semi-finals and remember to vote!

I think it would be good enough if I could raise a flag on a pole in time throughout the National Anthem. Perhaps, that would ba good achievement already. If you are going to ask me to glide and raise myself to the top of the pole? I have award-winning pole dancer Louis Sue on my speed dial and give him my vote. Louis started pole-dancing as an outlet to incorporate both fitness as well as dance. He hopes to promote pole-dancing as a mainstream fitness activity and break whatever stereotypes that people have of it. If you are interested, you may contact PXD Pole where Louis is an insturctor there!

InterContinental Hotels & Resorts Celebrates 200 Captivating Destinations

The world’s largest luxury hotel brand partners with artist, Alexander Hall, on art installation “200 InterContinentals by Haut de Gamme”

Leading luxury hotel brand InterContinental® Hotels & Resorts has partnered with London-based contemporary artist Alexander Hall, also known under the alias Haut de Gamme©, to create a stunning art installation, commemorating 200 InterContinental hotels and resorts around the world.

The art installation is made from 200 champagne bottles individually hand-painted by Alexander Hall in his bright and energetic drip-style. The artwork on each bottle is unique with the design of each one inspired by the InterContinental brand’s 200 hotels, including the upcoming opening of InterContinental® Shanghai Wonderland. The finished bottles are suspended together in a stunning oeuvre to reveal the number ‘200’.

Alexander Hall, Haut de Gamme, says: “When I first started painting champagne bottles I just wanted it to make people feel something positive. Champagne for me means happiness, joy, celebration and the idea of bringing people together. That’s why I decided to paint on champagne bottles to celebrate the 200 InterContinental hotels. I wanted the bottles to reflect each InterContinental hotel’s unique personality, design and location, as well as the legacy and pioneering spirit of the founder, Juan Trippe. It’s been an honour to be asked to do this project and I hope that when I’m 80, I will be asked to celebrate 400 InterContinental hotels around the world.”

Michael Martin, Regional General Manager for Singapore, Malaysia and Batam, and General Manager at InterContinental Singapore commented: “We are very privileged to be a part of the “200 InterContinentals” landmark celebrations. With InterContinental Singapore being the flagship luxury hotel in Southeast Asia, we are delighted to see that our heritage, along with other InterContinental hotels around the world had inspired such incredible art. This will only serve as a motivation for us to continue to commandeer luxury hospitality in Singapore as we have done since 1995.”

Tania Getzova, General Manager at InterContinental Singapore Robertson Quay also said of the achievement, “I am honoured to be celebrating this milestone together with hundreds of thousands of colleagues across the globe who are united by a deep passion for hospitality. With so many notable hotels in the world, InterContinental Hotels & Resorts has definitely made its mark on the world stage. We will continue to embrace authentic travel as an important and essential part of life and we look forward to the continued growth of the InterContinental brand as we
forge into the future!”

The upcoming InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland is located in a former quarry in southwestern Shanghai. The 18-storey architectural masterpiece has two floors above ground, and 16 below, including two floors underwater. Other recent openings for the brand include InterContinental® San Diego, a vibrant addition to the city’s waterfront, InterContinental® Sofia, which marked the brand’s debut in Bulgaria, and InterContinental Phu Quoc Long Beach Resort, on a stretch of idyllic beach on the Vietnamese island.

Founded in 1946 by aviation pioneer, Juan Trippe, InterContinental Hotels & Resorts is today the world’s largest luxury hotel brand, nearly twice the size of its nearest competitor. The brand has a history of pioneering luxury travel – by the end of the 1960s, the brand had debuted in Europe and Asia, reaching almost all four corners of the globe. From 1946 to 1970, Juan Trippe opened more than 60 hotels in 50 countries – at a time when the fastest transcontinental communication device was the telephone and the telegram.

Of note, InterContinental is currently running a high tea currently ongoing at The Lobby Lounge, running until 30 April 2019 entitled Classic Afternoon Tea : Celebrating 200; inspired by InterContinental 200 and Singapore Bicentennial.
