Samsung Galaxy S5

Hey everyone! I hope you guys are alive and kicking as we have passed more than half a year! There's always a lot of things to be excited about in the second half of the year. You can start counting down to Christmas, New Year, and many more!

I am glad to announce that I got a new mobile phone! For those who have been following me you'd have known by now. It is one of Samsung's latest - Galaxy S5. There are many things that I love about Galaxy S5! Today's post is for Samsung newbies like myself. Welcome to the club if you had just gotten your Samsung! As a first time user, there are so many cool things I found out about my new phone.

I thought I would get a Note 3 but judging by my lifestyle, it did not sit well in my hands. Galaxy S5 for a Samsung newbie is quite a handful already!

I am in love the Samsung's packaging because it is so green! The boxes are made of recycled material paper. Koreans are environmentally friendly I suppose? But who cares about the packaging, we want the handset and everything in it. Not the boxes!

The usual are in the package, just like any other. The handset (please report if there isn't!), charger (wires tend to get shorter by the day!) and a pair of earpiece.

Galaxy S5 is amazing. It's comparatively big as compared to my BlackBerry 9900 and a little smaller than Samsung Note 3. Which puts Galaxy S5 somewhere in between. After being so used to iPad, typing using physical keypad seems to need a lot of effort now! #lazyfingers

The touchscreen couldn't be more sensitive. On the first day I used the phone, I had people calling me back asking why I called. Then I realize in the call log was a list of people that I have called unknowingly! Embarrassing much! On a bright side, it's good to know that the S5 is very responsive.

Here are the  few major things that I love about Galaxy S5, that may or may not have in its predecessors. Can't have any opinion on the rest!

I can leave my digital camera at home.
Well, not really! I love S5's 16 megapixel camera. It makes everything look very, very detailed. Especially for photoholics like me who loves to snap almost anything, or anyone who thinks having a camera is too bulky, S5 is a perfect solution. The downside is, it does not take as good night images as a proper camera would. That sucks.

Many of those who has S5 can agree that the best camera feature is the beauty shot tool where it enhances the look of your face or at least reduces noise. I always use this function if I find my pictures a little bit noisy. It eliminates it a little bit.

Raining? No worries.
With an IP67 certification, Galaxy S5 is resistant to sweat, rain, liquid, sand and dust. Resistant is not the same as proof just so you know. Even so, it is still a great architectural feat for Samsung's baby because it helps people like me who has sweaty palms to use the phone without worrying of damaging it in the long run. Often times I worry that the sweat from my hands would seep through the openings of my phone. Now, I don't have to worry that much. I don't even have to dust the insides of my phone anymore!

I can also make a call or a selfie in the rain!

Less worry about power banks and chargers.
That does not go to say you should leave your power banks at home if you are such a heavy user. Samsung Galaxy S5 is equipped with Power Saving and Ultra Power Saving Mode. Use the Ultra Power Saving Mode to save and extend your battery life so you no longer have to worry about missing important calls when your phone is running low on battery. This innovative feature changes your screen to black and white and shuts down all unnecessary features to dramatically minimize battery consumption. At least it can last you to be contactable throughout the day!

Power download.
The Download Booster technology lets you use the LTE and Wi-Fi concurrently to give you an unrivalled network experience. When you need to download files in a hurry, turn on the LTE and Wi-Fi together and experience up to 3X5 faster download speed compared to when using either 4G or Wi-Fi only.

It's not just a smartphone, it's a sporty phone.
Samsung Galaxy S5 is the first phone to have heart rate sensor, and integrated S Health application. At a touch of a button, you can put your finger on the built-in Heart Rate Sensor which enables you to measure your heart rate. Although up till today I am not so sure on what is considered a healthy heart rate (is there?) but it is always good to know that I have a heart rate to measure!

The enhanced S Health leads you through your fitness routines daily and consistently. Set your goals and achieve them with the help of Galaxy S5's pedometer and S Health’s constant tracking of your condition, walking distance, calories, speed, duration, and so on.

On top of that, Play Store has a lot of fitness related applications which I downloaded some of them. I find them really helpful especially in busy months like this, where I don't have much time to be out and about. It is always good to know that technology can assist you by measuring how many sit ups, pull ups, or push ups you have done. Amazing!

I did not read much about the S5 initially but judging by the widgets, it's not just a smarty phone, it's a sporty phone. Especially now when my rest days are limited to sleeping hours only, it is so hard to find time to gym. Yes, people from the gym have been asking about my absence. I appreciate that a lot! Now I can always use the apps to help me. Not to say it should replace a proper trainer but these apps are very handy should you travel!

Before I wrap up, here are the few apps that I have and you should too!

  1. VSCOCam - I love their filters! Enhances the color and apparently my images look sharper with their filters.
  2. Facebook, Instagram and Twitter - How else are you going to stalk me? Or your friends for that matter. Hehe!
  3. BBC Widget - Get the latest news from BBC from the convenience of your home screen.
  4. Comfort Delgro - Easy and fast way to get City Cab! Especially for travellers who want to get to places fast!
  5. MyTransport by LTA - Very convenient for those who are taking the public transport as you are able to find out the bus arrival time. I personally love the live traffic camera! I can always find out which road to avoid while on the road. Road safety is paramount, only do it when you are safe!
  6. Runtastic workout applications - Very helpful for travelers who wishes to workout at places where gym is very remote and hard to find. Really love them!
  7. Hydro - Simple but very helpful. It helps to remind you hourly that you should drink up! Especially in humid metropolitan countries like Singapore. Always remember to stay hydrated!
  8. Google Hangout - The group video call function is seamless!
Hope those who are contemplating to get a Galaxy S5 has a better idea on what they are in for. Join my club!
